It’s an unfortunately well known fact that somewhere around 90% of online shoppers scroll right past the ads, and intentionally at that. 

It’s equally well-known that even with experts managing an eCommerce PPC campaign, you can still only hope for an average click-through rate of about 2%.

Adding to this, there are industries that can’t advertise at all. Among those that can, there is often stiff competition, and the more competitors there are, the more you have to pay for your ads to get seen and clicked. 

All for the hope of getting enough return to cover the cost of the campaign as well as the management fee. 

But it can be done and eCommerce PPC management is something at which we excel – as will be demonstrated here. 

About the Client, Industry, and Challenges Faced

The client in question is one that specializes in formulating clean supplements that are designed to improve holistic wellness, from pure ingredients sourced from all over the world. 

If that sounds like a competitive market to you, you’d be right. There are 16 full pages of results for the keyword “clean supplements” alone. 

Despite the interest in and high volume associated with qualified target keywords for this client, the competition was immense. 

That, and the number of qualified competitors with good brand awareness and relatively high domain authority also squeezed the market even further. 

Our approach for this client was multi-pronged, but it hinged heavily on audience targeting, keyword targeting and bid strategy, and a series of ongoing optimizations implemented after the campaign was launched. 

Ad Campaign Proliferation and Optimization

One of the keys to our success with this campaign was the fact that we utilized so many different campaign types with an emphasis on maximizing return on investment. 

One of the main drivers of success for this campaign was our utilization of a Pmax campaign that served ads across several channels, including Search, Display, Shopping and YouTube. The specific goal of this campaign was to maximize conversion value. 

We automated audience targeting, without utilizing predefined segments, which enabled us to cut costs associated with targeting while boosting performance. The Pmax campaign utilized 83% of the total budget and returned an impressive ROAS of 7.8. That is to say, for each dollar this client invested, $7.80 came out of the campaign.

In addition, we ran a Dynamic Search campaign, targeting website URLs, and which automatically generated ad copy, with a campaign goal of improving ROAS. This campaign accounted for 9% of the total budget and generated a ROAS of 6.8.

We also ran a Branded Search campaign in tandem with the others, focused on increasing exposure for branded terms. Though this campaign only utilized 8% of the total budget, it delivered an unbelievable ROAS of 64. 

All in all, this mix of campaigns was strategic and ensured optimal performance with a focus on conversions and ROAS, across a diverse group of channels, all while delivering performance among shoppers in various stages of the funnel. Moreover, the campaigns improved not only revenue, but also brand visibility – which brings up another element of success.

The Intangibles 

While it’s easy to see how a high ROAS and revenue directly impact a company’s bottom line, what it’s tough to account for are the intangibles. 

But doubtless, many online shoppers were exposed to this client’s brand and did not immediately convert. 

It’s a well known fact that familiarity with a brand makes a lead more likely to convert, even if not immediately. The fact of the matter may be that some of the company’s organic conversions were assisted by our eCommerce PPC management efforts. 

And that is another reason that a unified digital marketing strategy has the potential for such great efficacy. 

With that said, let’s take a closer look at the data. 

The Results: A High-Level Look at 2023 vs. 2022

If you take nothing else away from this case study, internalize the data shown above that illustrates the performance of this campaign from 2022 to 2023. 

Though it tells a slightly different picture in terms of metrics than what has been shown so far, it is evident enough that from 2022 to 2023, clicks, conversions and conversion value all rose while the cost of conversions fell, indicating a higher net profitability for this client’s PPC campaigns.

We accomplished this in part, through a combination of active and passive optimization efforts, delivering an increase in conversions and revenue for the client – the bottom line in almost all eCommerce PPC campaigns.

The rapid evolution of technology and consumer behaviors has made digital marketing an indispensable tool in growing market share. But what even is “market share” as it relates to the digital landscape, and how do you actually go about capturing more of it as a business owner?

This article explores the relationship between digital marketing and capturing market share online, specifically as it relates to 2024 and the shifts we’re seeing in marketing as a whole.

Understanding the Digital Landscape

The first step in leveraging digital marketing for an increase in market share is understanding the complete digital landscape.

The internet is a vast, crowded marketplace where millions of businesses vie for attention. In this context, digital marketing is not just about selling products; it’s about establishing a brand presence, engaging with customers, and differentiating your business from competitors.

Many glance over this point, but it’s worth repeating. While everyone knows the ultimate “goal” of eCommerce marketing is to sell more products, there is a limit to how many products you can sell during a given period if your market share isn’t high.

Some businesses thrive by cornering the market in an area they specialize in. Niching down like this used to be extremely practical. The issue now is, as eCommerce becomes more accessible and the barrier of entry lessens for everyone, the competition increases.

Even relatively obscure niches that were easy to break into 20 years ago are now ultra saturated. Look at the supplement market for instance. In the late 90’s, organic and health supplements were still somewhat niche, with only a few small brands specializing in them. Now, in order to easily break into the supplement market, you practically have to invent a new kind of supplement altogether, or find a product that treats a newly discovered illness or symptom.

The same can be said for a multitude of niches and industries. The digital landscape is not the same as it was even 5 years ago.

What this means is that the same old marketing tactics are not going to net you the same amount of market share as they once did. In fact, you very well could be losing traction to more aggressive and knowledgeable competitors if you aren’t taking certain actions.

Let’s circle back to the core components of the digital landscape. SEO (organic reach in search engines, including eCommerce platforms like Etsy), PPC (paying for space in search engines or eCommerce platforms like Amazon), social media (paid and organic), your email list, and other channels such as podcasts.

Pushing products on these channels is great. But just because your product offerings are visible on your online store doesn’t mean they are visible “online,” so to speak. If your market share doesn’t match your marketing, and vice versa, you’re going to run into visibility issues.

For instance, one common problem we run into as marketers and strategists, is when a client feels as though they should be seen more over a certain competitor. The assumption is a newcomer to an industry should have no right ranking above a business that has been on the scene for 10 or 20 years.

This sounds logical on the surface because we know how much emphasis Google places on factors like trust and domain age.

Yet, as we enter 2024, this logic actually doesn’t hold up.

We’re in an age where absolute nobodies can rise to stardom overnight with one viral TikTok post. Where million dollar brands wink into existence because they happened to follow a viral trend or captured the attention of a certain influencer. Where memes rule the day and brand accounts on social media are almost encouraged to act funny or even zany in order to stand out from the crowd.

It comes down to market share: how well are you capturing the attention of your target audience using the marketing channels that are at your disposal?

Let’s take a closer look at those marketing channels and see what kind of role they can play to help us get where we want to be in 2024:

Digital Marketing Strategies for Market Share Expansion

SEO and Content Marketing: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and content marketing are fundamental in driving organic traffic to your eCommerce site. By optimizing your website and creating valuable content, you increase your visibility on search engines, making it easier for potential customers to find you.

Social Media Marketing: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter offer immense opportunities for brand exposure and customer engagement. Effective social media marketing can create brand advocates out of your customers and attract new ones through targeted campaigns.

Email Marketing: Often underrated, email marketing remains one of the most effective ways to engage with customers. Personalized emails can drive sales, promote customer loyalty, and keep your brand top-of-mind.

Pay-Per-Click Advertising: PPC campaigns can provide a quick boost in visibility and traffic. Platforms like Google Ads and Facebook Ads allow for highly targeted campaigns, reaching potential customers based on their search behavior, interests, and demographics.

Most eCommerce business owners know the importance of one or more of these channels, but understand them only in terms of selling products, not increasing market share.

The capture more attention and improve what I like to call brand equity, you need a mix of acting on data and acting on trends.

First, let’s talk data.

Data-Driven Decision Making

In digital marketing, data is king. Acting on the data instead of just relying on what feels right or what you would like to have happen can really make a difference in how you capture market share.

Through data, you can better understand the customer journey, and this is the heart of where you can make inroads as it pertains to improving market share. The journey that your customers take to buy your products is a reflection of how well they connect with your brand.

Let’s put it like this: all of the top brands in any niche have a seamless and even addictive customer journey.

Customers know exactly where to go and what to do in order to find the latest and greatest product offerings from these brands. The customer journey has become second-nature, everything from the ad placements to the after-purchase experience resonates with the target audience and is silky smooth.

This wasn’t done through guesswork, but by looking at the data and fine-tuning the experience in order to make it better. That’s how you capture market share.

Understanding Consumer Behavior

Customer Journey Analysis: Track the paths customers take from discovering your product to making a purchase. This data helps identify which marketing channels are most effective and where potential customers drop off.

Purchasing Patterns: Analyze purchase histories to understand what, when, and how often customers buy. This insight aids in forecasting demand, managing inventory, and creating targeted promotions.

Digital marketing services can be expensive. That’s no secret. But at the same time, every business has to spend money to make money, and you should think of the cost of (for instance) hiring an eCommerce SEO company as an investment and not just as an expense. 

A majority of digital marketing experts agree that SEO offers the best return on investment of all marketing channels. It is sustainable, efforts compound on themselves, and the results won’t fall off (like PPC) when you stop putting in work. 

Still, you don’t want to hire flippantly or have a cavalier attitude about attracting leads, right? 

So, vet your prospects before you hire by asking the following ten questions. 

Can You Explain Your SEO Process?

The purpose of this question is that it will give you an opportunity to understand SEO better (if you don’t) while also showing you exactly what efforts your money is going towards. 

There are over 200 ranking signals Google uses to assign rankings, and it’s hard to keep tabs on them all. An SEO company can go over the big ones with you so you know what’s important to work on during the course of a campaign. 

The answer to this question should also contain a detailed breakdown of what exactly the SEO company will deliver. Not all eCommerce SEO strategies are the same.

Some SEO companies build links. Others only do keyword research and optimize existing content. Some write blog posts and press releases to support content marketing efforts. Others only do basic on-page optimizations, like updating page titles and meta descriptions. 

Ideally, the SEO company hire should offer a full-service process that optimizes as many of these ranking signals as possible. But you definitely need to know what the process entails before hiring.

How Will You Adapt Your Process to My Company/Industry?

A standard process might work, but it won’t work as well for each unique customer as it might. For instance, some models follow a B2B structure. For these businesses, it often doesn’t make as much sense to go after high-volume keywords that consumers are searching. 

The search volumes might be lower for commercial keywords and search terms that businesses should be targeting if their main clients are other businesses, but that can still have a much bigger impact on a website’s overall organic footprint. 

Most eCommerce SEO companies will start with an audit and a competitor analysis to uncover your current positioning so that areas for improvement can be identified and suggested. 

This will help them set a strategy from the start and also position them with a deeper understanding of your industry at the beginning of the project so adjustments can be made as the campaign develops.

What Do You Consider a Successful SEO Project?

It’s important to understand the answer to this question from the start of the campaign because different eCommerce SEO companies might have starkly different barometers for what they consider success.

Some SEO experts consider it a success if keyword rankings improve, even if no clicks or sessions follow. Technically, if keyword rankings (and impressions) improve, SEO has been implemented and a website has climbed the organic search results. 

…But it also means that there’s a lot left on the table. Why pay for more impressions when no conversions result from it?

So, other SEO companies might define success as an increase not only in impressions, but also in clicks and sessions. And, ideally, targeting and buyer persona definition will have been accurate enough that some of that new influx of traffic is captured as leads or converts right through the website.

So, for others, success in eCommerce SEO is a sustained increase in organic revenue, although that is a very hard thing to directly control with SEO alone. 

How Familiar Are You with My eCommerce Platform?

All things being equal, the platform you’re on really doesn’t make that much of a difference for SEO. Strictly speaking, some are easier to optimize than others (like BigCommerce which automatically generates a site map, or WordPress that is easy to edit at the granular level) but that’s not the reason for this question. 

The reason for this question is because, in order to make a website “better” and optimize it for search engines, the eCommerce SEO company you hire will need to make on-page changes, post to your blog, add links, and that sort of thing. 

And that is not easy to do on a platform with which you’re not familiar. So, if you’re built on BigCommerce, it doesn’t hurt to work with an SEO agency that has some demonstrated proficiency with that platform. 

It shouldn’t be a dealbreaker, though. It’s just something else to weigh.

What Tools Do You Use?

This is a critical question to ask because it will give you some indication of what sorts of metrics will be reported on in the first place. 

The two basic SEO tools that all experts should use are Google Analytics and Google Search Console. 

Google Analytics tells SEO specialists about sessions, time on page, where traffic came from, and what actions (including conversions) users took, making it useful for tracking the success of organic efforts including conversion rates and sales.

Similarly, Google Search Console can lend some insights into increases in average organic position, impressions, clicks and click through rate, as well as what sorts of impressions the website’s pages are getting, and for which search terms.

Neither of these two platforms offers direct data regarding increases in organic positions for specific keywords (at least not in detail) so some SEO companies will use tools like SEMRush (which does show that, at the URL level) or their own proprietary eCommerce marketing tools. 

Either way, you should know what they are before signing on so you know what you’ll be getting. 

How Long Should It Be Until I See Results?

I caution you that while you should ask this question, you should also be very realistic about expectations 

I say that because as a person that has heard the question before, I hesitate to give a concrete answer. There are just too many variables and too many moving parts in SEO to be fair about it. 

Our process is effective and has a demonstrated history of results, but the speed with which it works depends on the current optimization of the client’s website, the number (and size) of their competitors, and what keywords we decide to target, as well as how many we choose to pursue. It also depends on the volume and competitive difficulty of the keywords we choose. .

Then again the time it takes to see improvements is also linked to factors that are difficult to account for, like what sorts of customizations we make (if any) for the client’s campaign. 

Here’s what I can say. Be very skeptical of any eCommerce SEO expert that promises anything, especially on a specific timeline. Sometimes SEO results roll in within a 3 month window, and sometimes it takes more than a year. 

In general, though, it takes more than 6 months, although that is a very loose average. All I can say is, be patient and recognize that you should be in SEO for the long haul if you pursue it as a digital marketing channel at all. 

What Cooperation Do You Need from Me/My Company to Ensure Success?

SEO is, more or less, a highly collaborative process, and more often than not, open lines of communication with and clear directions from a client help to get the ball rolling. 

The more available and responsive you can make yourself to your SEO expert partner, the more successful your campaign will be.

In a case study, the main things you’ll want to look for are increases in organic keyword rankings, organic impressions, clicks, sessions, and of course, the best news is when conversions, revenue/transaction value, and sales all increase. That often doesn’t happen till long down the line, but a well-established SEO process can get it done.

An eCommerce case study that contains all of those metrics (and some do) is all the more valuable. If the company can do it once, especially for a client in your vertical, they can more than likely do it for you. 

Another thing you can look at, if the company works with developers or designers, is a client portfolio. You could also make it a point to look through testimonials and reviews, especially if they are readily available. That won’t show you client success figures, but it will give you an indication of the level of service offered, and if most clients were happy or not. 

What Other Marketing Strategies Do You Offer?

SEO does not work in a vacuum. It both influences and is influenced by the efforts of other organic marketing campaigns, so all things considered, sometimes it’s best to work with a company that offers multiple additional organic marketing services. 

Even if you don’t want to sign up for anything other than SEO right now, down the line you might want to carve out some budget for content marketing, email marketing, social media management, and other marketing efforts. 

And, if you are comfortable (and happy) with the one agency already serving you with SEO efforts, why not just let them keep it all in house? That will be fewer points of contact for you to chase, anyway, and some SEO companies offer processes that are synergistic with their other marketing efforts. 

Plus, social media management and content marketing, specifically, can both positively impact SEO (they benefit from it too, though).

Many of the ranking factors that influence SEO fall more under the purview of a designer or developer than an SEO strategist. 

Items like site speed, security, structure, code, and integrations can all impact technical SEO optimization. 

Even though the strategist must be able to identify these issues, rectifying them may take certain technical skills and acumen that he or she does not possess, and deference to a designer or developer is in order.

There’s another reason to work with an SEO specialist that works with professional designers or developers or has their own in-house: to improve UX.

Let’s say, hypothetically, that your website is a little bit, shall we say, dated. Perhaps it’s not mobile-optimized or the landing pages you’re targeting for your SEO efforts are terribly UX-optimized. 

Getting a page that generates a lot of bounce to increase in the organic search results without making any supplementary changes to improve UX is likely to generate more bounce. The worst thing you can do is not improve the page and invite more potential customers to visit by improving SEO. You’ll get more clicks but a whole lot more bounce and possibly cart abandonment to show for it.

A designer or developer can create custom page templates, redesign the layout, and make a page more user-friendly and conversion-optimized, giving you the best chance of reaping a conversion when an organic user actually lands on the page.

Is email dead? The question gets thrown around practically every end and start of a year. And now that we’re nearing the end of 2023, it’s probably a question some entrepreneurs and businesses are asking yet again. After all, with all the shiny new things like AI and Thread, or the constant rise of TikTok, does anyone still use email?

The answer is a resounding, “Yes! People still use email.”

Not only that, email marketing is still effective, especially for online and ecommerce business. Just think about how many emails you get from Amazon about the stuff you left in your shopping cart, or a list of recommendations to go with your recent frying pan and kitchen ware purchase. If the king of ecommerce is still actively using email marketing, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t.

More than just platitudes, however, allow me to go through a couple of concrete reasons why you should still very much consider jumping into email marketing if you aren’t already.

 

1. Email Marketing Statistics

Let’s be honest, ever since Meta, and every other social media platform, started allowing advertising on their platform it’s been a war on ad spend. Despite how seemingly old email marketing is, email is still able to give you an average open rate of about 19.21% across various industries. Compare that with social media’s organic reach of only 2-5% of your existing audience.

Similarly, click-through rates (CTR) are also considerably higher on email than on social media, with the average CTR for email marketing resting at roughly 2.5%, and only 0.07% for Facebook.

Even in terms of returns, email marketing continues to trump social media, generating a whopping 3600% ROI (that’s $36 for every $1 spent), whereas social media estimates returns around $2.80 for every $1 spent.

All these figures are a testament to the simple fact that practically everyone who’s online has an email, but not everyone is on social media. In fact, the total number of active email users in 2023 is over 4.2 billion, compared to Facebook’s 2.96 billion active users at the closing of 2022.

If all that’s not enough to convince you, though, then let’s go through a couple of other things email has that might.

 

2. Email Marketing Has Better Personalization

When you post something on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or X you’re not necessarily addressing anyone in particular. Rather, social media can be likened to shouting your message out into a crowded city block. Not everyone hears you, and oftentimes those that do will simply keep walking on by.

With email marketing, you get to personalize your message to the point that you can include the first and/or last name of your subscribers in every subject line or body of your email.

You can also segment your audience!

This means that you get to group your audience into little buckets of where they are in their journey or relationship with you. Are they new subscribers, wallflowers, or big spenders? Have they ever purchased one of your products or services? If so, you can speak to those people directly and offer them something that might either complement or supplement their previous purchase.

With social media, the ability to retarget users has been limited by a demand for more privacy and security. Some people don’t want their data to be sold to advertisers, and so they opt out of allowing Meta to collect their data.

Your email subscribers, on the other hand, have actively chosen to receive updates from you. They chose to be there! That’s why all their numbers are up compared to social.

 

3. Email Marketing Gives You Ownership

It wasn’t that long ago that a lot of people feared that Twitter was going away. Then along came Meta’s new Threads app, which they dubbed its killer. And although Threads never really took over X in terms of active users, the fear was still there, especially for people who’d already built their following on X.

What this tells you is that social media platforms may come and go. What was popular one day, may just as easily disappear on the next. What happens to your following then?

You also have to take into account that these platforms can shadow ban you if they don’t approve of your content. What this means is that they’ll limit the visibility of your posts if they don’t agree with your message.

On social media, you’re subject to their rules and regulations. And if they go away one day, it’s going to take a bit of effort for you to get your fans to migrate with you onto another platform.

With email, that’s something you never have to worry about.

Even if you do decide to migrate to a different email marketing platform, exporting and importing your list is as easy as the click of a button. Your audience might never even realize that you’ve switched sides.

Email marketing gives you complete ownership of your audience, your reach, your engagement, and your return on investment. You’re not subject to the changing winds and whims at any social media conglomerate.

And just to repeat the metaphor that many a marketer has used before, having your own mailing list is like owning a piece of land. It’s your property, and you can do anything you want with it. If you build it, they will come.

On the other hand, building a following on social media is like building a home on rented property. If the landlord doesn’t like you, or chooses to sell or demolish the building, then you’re out on the streets.

 

4. Email Marketing Lets You Nurture Leads Better

Besides allowing you to personalize your messages to your audience, email marketing also allows you to get close and personal. Remember, you’re not shouting into a vacuum whenever you send out an email. You’re sending a letter to people who’ve chosen to hear from you—a pen pal if you will.

This alone means that you have permission to build your relationship with your audience, one by one.

In fact, one very successful strategy that you can apply with your audience, is to survey them. If you sell digital marketing services (or any kind of service-based product, for that matter), ask them what they’re struggling with the most, and what kind of help they need.

If you sell toys, action figures, or video games online, then ask your audience what games they’d want to see you pre-order or restock. And this question works for virtually any product or industry, whether its apparel, beauty products, or handmade goods.

Your subscribers have chosen to allow your business into their inbox, so treat them as you would treat any friend that’s interested in what you do. Don’t spam them with constant marketing spiels and babbles. Instead, build up trust and familiarity. Your business will be all the better for it.

 

5. Email Marketing is Less Distracting

Lastly, the one huge boon of social media is also its bane. Because while it’s true that you can discover many different things through social media (thanks to advertising, viral posts, and organic shares within your circle of friends), you can also be distracted by a lot of the things that go on inside of it.

Sure, that hoodie your friend shared on their feed might get your attention. But unless your friend shared a link to the company’s website, you’re not likely to get a similar hoodie yourself.

When it comes to the mindset that the environment sets for its users, email and social media are also vastly different. Because while spam still does get into people’s inboxes, most people will still choose to open emails from people they know, like, and trust.

Social media, on the other hand, is designed to keep you scrolling. Once in a while, something may get your attention, but overall you’re bound to just mindlessly find that next fix from that endless scroll.
