Backlinks are links that lead to your website from other websites. These are also known as Inbound Links. The more backlinks that Google search engine crawlers find for your website, the more important Google thinks your site is. As Google finds your site to be more important, your site’s chances of moving up in search rankings increase.

“Well that’s great! I’m going to toss links to my website everywhere!”

STOP! Backlinks can also backfire on your website’s SEO.

Search engines are looking for quality backlinks to your site, meaning they must be found on other, quality websites. Essentially, Google will not consider a backlink to be valid if it is found on a “spammy” website or a website that does not utilize fair and good SEO practices.

Quality links are also determined by the amount of relevant content that is shared between the two websites. For example, if you run a website selling designer handbags and a designer handbag blog links to your website, then Google gives your website something akin to a “high-five” for establishing a quality backlink.

On the other hand, if Google finds a backlink on “spammyspamspam.com,” you are going to get a slap on the wrist from Google because it thinks that you put the link there just to increase the amount of backlinks for your site. Too many of these bad backlinks can lead to some serious repercussions from Google, so try to be mindful of where your backlinks are!
